P.S.M Chandran on WSH as Chief Medical Officer

MUMBAI, 5 Dec, 2011: Dr. PSM Chandran, a distinguished doctor who has been involved with multiple sports at the international level for more than three decades, has come on board as Chief Medical Officer for World Series Hockey.

In his role, he will be primarily responsible for the health of the athletes taking part in the newest global sports league in the world. He is currently the Chief Medical Officer for Hockey India and was the programme officer of the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Dr Chandran has been involved in organizing Sports Medical Cover and Doping Control to more than 100 National and International Sports meets including World Cups, World Championships, Asia Cup, Asian Games, Asian Championships, Commonwealth Games, Davis Cup Tennis, Champions Trophy Hockey, IPL and National Games.

He was responsible for establishing the sports medicine centre at the Sports Authority of India in 1984 and was the director of the institute for 25 years. He also served as the contingent doctor for India in multiple Olympics and Asian Games and was the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) appointed Medical Officer for several international hockey events, including the Champions Trophy in 2004, 2005 and 2007.

Dr Chandran said, "Hockey is my first love. I played state level hockey as a youngster and I’ve been involved with the medical side of the sport since 1984. Having been a medical officer in international hockey events in the past, i’m excited to be involved with a global event like World Series Hockey I look forward to ensuring that the players are in the best of health throughout the tournament”

Harendra Singh, ex-coach of the Indian hockey team and one of the 8 coaches for World Series Hockey, said, “For the players, top quality medical health is an extremely important aspect of playing in an international tournament. It ensures that their physical well being will be well taken care, leaving them to focus solely on playing at their best. Dr Chandran has been involved with hockey at the international level for many years and his presence will surely serve as a big boost to the confidence of the players participating in World Series Hockey”

Dennis Meredith, Technical Director of World Series Hockey, said “The appointment of Dr Chandran as Chief Medical Officer is a pointer towards the seriousness with which World Series Hockey is approaching the well being of its players. Dr Chandran’s vast experience in this area will be much appreciated and will ensure that the tournament is conducted on par with global standards as far as medical support is concerned”
