West Asia wakes up to hockey - West Asia Cup next (5/31/2011)

If everything goes well, Asia will have a new competition, West Asia Cup, form next year onwards.

The decision was taken during the first West Asia meet to foster Regional Cooperation in Hockey, held at the Ramada Hotel in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday 25th May 2011.

The gathering also sought to organize India-Pakistan hockey series on their soils.

Other important decisions taken include:
Develop Coaches and Umpires of the region
Develop Indoor Hockey - hold regional competitions - Bahram Shafei to produce a plan
Develop inter school, inter Club and National Level tournaments on a regional basis
Enhance the image of the game - Hold high profile FIH-AHF tournaments in the region.
Hold high profile competitions including India vs Pakistan series in the region
Build up sponsorship partners, work to attain corporate partners for the region including the Travel industry
It was also agreed that a firm time lines will be established to execute the above plan and committee will prioritize few items in order to initiate the activities in 2011 and 2012.

Mr Hassan AL Qadi President opened the meeting and welcomed the delegates.

Mr Mohamed Abdul Nazer introduced members and informed the basic concept of the first ever West Asian meeting.

Mr Tayyab Ikram chaired the meeting and made a presentation on development of hockey in the region with emphasis on the individual role of NAs in the region.

All National Associations have made individual presentations.

Bahrain Hockey Association made a presentation highlighting the history and present activities and their objective of joining FIH-AHF at the earliest.

Mr Tayyeb Ikram presented a summary of the deliberations with an action plan as follows.

Set up a Coordination Committee - Mr Hassan Al Qadi was elected unanimously to chair the committee with the Secretariat in Doha. Post meeting Mr Hassan Al Qadi, nominated Mohamed Abdul Nazer as the Secretary General.

It was agreed that all the Presidents or their nominees to become the member of this new committee and AHF development Coordinator for the region would act as advisor.
