A goal each from Shivender Singh, Prabhjot Singh and Arjun Halappa helped India to lift the prestigious Azlan Shah Cup after a gap of 13 years. Led by Pargat Singh, now Director Sports Punjab Govt., India last won the Cup at Kualal Umpur after a cruelling tie-breaker against Germany in 1995.

13 years later, another defender - Sandeep Singh -- propelled India to the top podium on Sunday at Ipoh.

Veteran Arjun Halappa -- declared Man of the Match -- who scored a goal against the Malaysians in the league as well, set the ball rolling in favour of India with a goal in the 8th minute itself

However, three minutes later Azlan Misron equalized (1-1). It appeared a tough fight on hand with this equlizer.

Prabhjot Singh entered his name in the score board, first time in the week, in the 20th minute with an immaculate field goal.

Thereafter, it was all the way for the visiting side. Not to be complacent, centre forward Shivender Singh punched a goal in the 41st minute.

There was no last minute hassles, as the Indian defence manned by Dilip Tirkey safe-guarded the cage till the hooter.

Man-of-the-match: Arjun Halappa

Top Goalscorer: Sandeep Singh (India, 6 goals)

Best Goalkeeper: Subramaniam Kumar, goalkeeper (Malaysia)

Player of the Tournament: Sandeep Singh (India)

Fairplay: New Zealand.

Its good to see India winning.I'm sure this is a small milestone in our road to World Cup glory. We have a good calendar ahead of us till year end, hopefull we will improve with exposure and be a force to reckon with in the World Cup. There is still a lot to be done to improve hockey at the grass roots and at the junior level. Sticktohockey is doing its bit, i hope this movement will help the adminsitrators wake up and take our Country to where it deserves to be Good Luck India

Wining Azlan Shah Cup should give India confidence and mentally prepare for Asian And World Cup. Players should not sit on their laurels in fact now they will be target as other teams are watching them and preparing for their weaknesses. India still needs another solid back along with Dilip and hope Sandeep keeps on improving his tackling skills along with penalty corners. A step in right direction.
