India makes a winning start (4/19/2008)
--K. Arumugam
Under prepared Indian team overcomes fighting Russia 3-1 in their first match at Kazan, Russia. Rani Devi, Jasjeet Kaur and Pritamrani Siwach scored for India, while early inthe second half Russia equalized the Indian lead.

It was a mixed day for India. Forwards did not play upto the mark, the midfield was anything but hapazard. India was lucky to have a team like Russia, where the sport is just coming up after a big gap, in the opening match.

After missing many sitters -- Surinder hit twice off target -- India managed to score in the first half. But after scoring, it made simple mistakes. Delay in passing, over dependence on over-head passes, panicky at times, all contributed to its rather poor show.

It appeared midway in the first half, the match is slipping out of hands. Asunta Lakra, Subhadra Pradhan, the two pivots, made mistakes that told on the defence. As usual, Binita Toppo played a cool game in the defence. Suman Bala, despite being senior, is yet to shine. Her penalty corner execution leaves much to be desired.

India might have walked keeping its heads high, but for to overcome more disciplined teams, it has to make a good analysis of today's match.

India takes on Netherlands Antilles tomorrow in its second match. Scorers

Rani Devi 9th Minute FG
Irina Kuzmia PCG
Jasjeet Kaur FG
Pritamrani Siwach FG
