Harkrishan School to start a hockey academy (9/11/2008)

Hockey buff and educationist Dr. Dharam Veer Singh announces formation of a hockey academy in Harkrishan Public School, Amritsar, of which he is the principal. He is also in command of the environment being the Joint Director of the Chief Khalsa Diwan, the apex body that manages the group of prestigious educational institutions.

He made the invaluable and far reaching decision during a brief but impressive ceremony held in the campus of Harkrishan Public School, GT Road, Amritsar recently.

“We are introducing the game of hockey for the first time in this GT Road school. Shortly, hockey will be there all the member schools in the chain of Harkrishan Public Schools we have”, Dr. Dharam Veer Singh declared on 10th September, while witnessing his wards practicing the game. The school was motivated to go in for hockey by the known hockey enthusiast Prof. Pramjit Singh Randhawa of the same city.

In a subsequent press release, Dr. Dharam Veer Singh stated that Harkrishan School XI will be made just as striking a force in the domestic circuit as Namdhari XI. He promised to set an academy where the budding hockey players will be trained by national level coaches. He said that there was time when Punjab and Sikhs in particular dominated the hockey world. “Who can ever forget S. Dharam Singh, our Olympic hero who hailed from Amritsar”, he asked.

“It is sad irony that hockey which brought eight Olympic gold medals to the country is the most neglected game today”. It is out of sync with our sporting ethos that the people of our country are die-hard fans of cricket -- a game of glitz and glamour -- whereas hockey, our national does not have a fan following.

During the occasion, Prof Randhawa gave an inspirational speech to the students during the assembly. He opined if the Principal Dr. Dharam Veer Singh’s initiatives take shape, hockey in the region will witness a revolution of sorts.

S2h expects the same and also wishes the premier institution a success in its future sports initiatives in particular hockey.

Hockey is a game which promotes India and particularly the punjabi's....This is the game which could add more respect in the mind of the people of world...So promote this game to promote ur self....

I just wanna say that the punjabi has the attitude to do....Do things which are impossible.....But if a punjabi thinks to do a particular thing or act or promote something...No one can lend him down...So we should bring that attiude in us(We already have this attitude) but we need to channalize this quality of punjabi's in the promotion of Hockey(our national Game)

Punjab which has produced so many hockey player particular sikh players Why these days Punjab is forgetting hockey & becoming interested in cricket? So, to come forward in hockey game All Punjabi should boycott cricket.

Pargat singh,Udham singh,Balbir singh,Mukhbain singh,Varinder singh,Prithipal singh,Ajitpal singh are d worth noting names in d indian hockey team..We should repeat the golden history of hockey...In Chak de India also Shahrukh Khan gives his stick to a sikh boy wen he became world champion ...It is a beautiful msg dat sikh children should be faithful to their hockey heritage .... Being d Ex Student of dis school i would like to congratulate dat school authorities finally gave the permission to introduce Hockey as d new soprt in d school rather dan Cricket...Cheerz to everybody...Well d DP of d school Mr.maninder singh(shown in d pics in pink turban)was a great hockey fan n olwayz want to introduce hockey in d school...N i guess ur Prof.Sardar Paramjit Singh Randhawa added a fuel to dat fire..being Ex Student of d school I thank him and also congratulate him dat wat hez doin is not goin in vain as a new school introduced Hockey in itz sports ... A new debate now … Cricket versus Hockey… actually, the debate should have been: the pathetic fate of sports in India except cricket.Well, I just happened to read about the hockey players making hue and cry over the step-motherly treatment given to the national game,cricket being the chief reason. I daresay this to be an absolute truth. Nobody gave a damn when India won the Asia Cup last year but on the twenty twenty world cup win, people were gone mad after it.Whose fault is this? Government or people ?? The thing is: people will watch only that which pleases them whether its hockey or cricket or some other game.What matters is how you are promoting the game? There is nobody to endorse hockey or as a matter of fact, none of the games except cricket. The announcement of prizes in the form of money for the cricket players by BCCI is justified as it is just concerned about cricket but, this wasn’t anticipated from the government which didn’t pay much attention to the Asia Cup winners.The government should be equally responsible for all the games and not just some particular game. I personally like cricket more than any other game to b very frank but after seeing d condition of players of hockey who ratherly works more harder dan d cricket players ..i jus felt like wat i did was wrong ... "Hockey - The game of Pride"

According to me Hockey is the game of "Pride" and "Standard",it cannot be played in streets,lanes,terrace of buildings like cricket.Cricket is not a Game,it a way to Earn money.Hockey inspite of being National Game is not so much popular,where as Cricket being an outsiders game is liked and is promoted by Indians.People have more craze for cricket as compared to other games like Football,Basketball,Table Tennis and the most important hockey,which is to shameful.So,I appeal the readers and young youth not to neglect hockey but you should come forward and fulfil your responsibility towards national game as the time demands it.

Harkrishan public Schools can bring Hockey Revolution,if the Chief Khalsa Diwan's(CKD)managment tries to promote Hockey by consituting the Hockey Academy and forming a Harkrishan Public School Hockey team of 11 players team like 'Namdharis'.If you turn the pages of Golden History of Indian Hockey,you will find many Sikh Hockey stars has brought Lawrence not only to Hockey and but also to Sikhism.Some of the Sikh Hockey Stars are Balbir Singh,AjitpalSingh, Prithpal Singh,Harmeek Singh,Gurbaksh Singh,Mukhbain Singh,Harvinder Singh Chimni,Pargat Singh but now the golden history of Sikh Hockey Stars should be Repeated.Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee(SGPC)and Chief Khalsa Diwan(CKD)should come forward to Promote Hockey.I really Appreciate Harhrishan public school for introducing Hockey for the first time. Hockey is in our soil .. in our hearts ... it is the only sport india has dominated for years ... bt now every1's attention has been dragged away from this beautiful game... The problem lies for hockey in the fact that we have not been able to market it properly.Not a single advertising firm or company has shown interest in selling its products or marketing it using a hockey theme only when ppl start taking interest in other sports will media coverage increase and then sponsor's will step in.......nobody is stopping ppl from watching cricket but they should support other sports as well...... We shud not forget that Hockey is the only game which made us proud by winning 8 gold medals nd 6 out of them were won in a row in olympics... well,its nt only hockey tht we have to improve, all other sports shud also b given as much importance as we are giving to cricket... for e.g sports which are in olympics...The reason behind India's poor performance in sports is due to the attitude of indians towards sports...we are not paying attention towards these games... children should take interest in other sports also...every1 is just moving towards cricket...M not against cricket but there shud be a balance in all sports like other countries are having....This is there secret of success....those people are not after only one game,they pay attention towards all other activities and sports also....
