Chimni Column: Hockey Player's Prayer (5/22/2009)
--HJS Chimni
World Cup Goldie HJS Chimni feels the following is what a hockey player should pray every morning to become a better player.

Hockey Player’s Prayer

- I am the best.

- If I have the requisite ball control, no one can snatch the ball from me.

- When ever I am in possession of the ball, when released, it should preferably go to my team- mate or out of play. But never to the opponents.

- Through out the duration of the match I should keep asking myself, “ “By being where I am, how am I helping the team. If not, I should move to a place where it facilitates my team-mates or puts me in a better position to do some thing worth while myself.”

- Before I receive the ball, I should have appreciated my options. This is possible by thinking ahead.

- If I have the skill, I can create an opportunity where none exists.

- I should cover any mistake made by the team-mates. This will lead to mutual confidence.

- I should be careful not to unnecessarily pick up a yellow / red card. By sitting out with a temporary / permanent suspension, I am adding to the team’s problems.

- Nothing succeeds like success. Success comes through scoring goals. Scoring goals is most important. To score I must position myself at the right place. But I should not be overanxious to score; then I am likely to make a mistake.

- Whenever on field, I must give my 100 percent.

- If I think I can, I can.

- Sometimes you have to be lucky to win. But God also helps those who help themselves. Gold Medal 3rd World Cup Hockey Tournament Malaysia - 1975
